DTU Times interviewed the newly-appointed Cultural Council, USME - Nikhil Gaur (Cultural Secretary PG), Divyansh Kamal (Cultural Secretary UG), Kartik Mittal (Joint Cultural Secretary), Kalash Aggarwal (Treasurer) and Lakshay Aggarwal (Cultural Advisor).

How do you make use of your managerial know-how and skills to gauge your event's qualitative and quantitative magnitude?

Managerial skills aren’t taught; they are acquired through pragmatic groundwork combined with the application of theoretical knowledge. We attempt to apply the knowledge of our subjects to all initiatives here at USME. We witnessed the work done by our seniors and faculty members first-hand and aim to use our learnings. Despite having limitations, we give our best and the overwhelming responses of the students upon putting together a good event always remain our biggest motivation.

How is the council able to overcome the various hurdles faced while organising events successfully?

Barriers and blockades are inevitable but they shouldn’t stop us from moving forward. We try to work our way around them and achieve our set targets. The paucity of funds is one of the most prominent barriers we face when organising any event. With the help of corporate contacts and a dedicated Fund Raising Cell, we manage to bag sponsorships and scale our events.

What are some important factors to consider before putting together a good event and how do you measure its success?

1. Planning

Organising a successful event requires rigorous hours of planning and meticulous plotting of every aspect of the event, right from getting sponsorships and job distribution, to timing every activity till the last minute. We plan all the logistics and the promotion work of the events.

2. Drafting Budget

We draft our budget after extensive market research whilst we check for any unforeseeable situation and accounting for miscellaneous overhead expenses too at the same time.  

3. Allocating Responsibilities

We distribute tasks among all the team members not only during the preparation stage but also at the time of the event so that we know who to contact for any specific issue. We also have faculty advisors to help us through thick and thin.

4. Promotions

With a concrete plan and a dedicated team, we target our audience well and ensure that our ideas are accurately conveyed and use the help of posters, class-to-class promotions and well drafted messages to reach out. 

5. Measuring Success

The smiles on the faces of all the attendees gives us the feedback that the event was a success. After the post-production evaluations and cost analysis, we measure the efficiency in the planning and execution of every event.

How do you intend to change the academics-oriented mindset of the students and encourage their participation in extracurricular activities?

It’s important to get good grades, but it is equally important to develop interpersonal skills. Extracurricular activities allow students to relax and identify new hobbies, and it will certainly aid students a lot in their professional life. Our university promotes participation in these activities and encourages students to learn from their experience. All in all, the pursuit of these activities will certainly lead to a fulfilling academic experience.

What should be expected of the cultural council this year concerning the annual fest - Traction? 

The Cultural Council is set to organise the fest at an even bigger scale. We have already started working upon the shortcomings of the previous years. We are looking forward to securing more sponsorships this academic year, and have started working on inviting the star performers to the fest. The Cultural Council is determined to make the annual fest attain new heights.
